Top 5 Tips to Prevent Loss from Wildfires

Wildfires are becoming more frequent, more destructive and are no longer limited to a single season. Taking steps before a wildfire threatens your area can help reduce damage, protect your property and make recovery easier.

Here are our top five tips to help you prepare:

Tip #1: Create a Safety Zone Around Your Property

Reduce potential fuel sources around your building by:

  • Cutting and watering your lawn
  • Pruning trees and shrubs
  • Removing dry vegetation and debris
  • Keeping roofs and gutters clear of leaves and other flammable materials

A well-maintained property can help slow the spread of fire.

Tip #2: Strengthen Your Building Against Wildfires

When making upgrades or renovations, choose materials designed to withstand fire exposure, including:

  • Concrete or brick construction materials
  • Class A-rated roofing
  • Tempered double-pane windows
  • Metal vent screens to help block embers

These improvements can significantly increase your property’s ability to withstand wildfires.

Tip #3: Secure Outdoor Areas When Wildfire Threatens

If a wildfire is projected in your area:

  • Bring outdoor furniture and other combustible items indoors
  • Remove debris from around the building
  • Clear gutters and roof areas one final time

Taking these steps can help prevent wind-driven embers from igniting your property.

Tip #4: Have an Evacuation Plan Ready

Know how you’ll respond before an emergency occurs

  • Establish evacuation routes
  • Follow recommendations from local fire officials
  • Monitor emergency alerts and news updates
  • Ensure family members or employees know the plan

Preparation helps you act quickly when every minute counts.

Tip #5: Keep an Emergency Kit Prepared

Have essential supplies ready to go, including:

  • Water and nonperishable food
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Portable power banks
  • First-aid supplies
  • Important documents and contact information

An emergency kit can help keep you safe during an evacuation or power outage. Read this checklist to make sure you have all the essentials handy in an emergency.

Wildfires can occur with little warning, but preparation can make a significant difference. By maintaining your property, strengthening your building and having a plan in place, you’ll be better prepared for future wildfire events.
